Artist Statement

The American theatre critic Brooks Atkinson wrote that, “The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep looking.” I remember picking up a Brownie camera when I was about ten and trying to take snaps of my friends throwing each other into the snow. After a while, they threw me into the snow. But I guess I kept looking. I tried taking pictures of street corners, light bulbs, the legs of running dogs, television sets tuned to cartoons, anything. Sideways pictures. Upside-down pictures. And then, inexplicably, I forgot about cameras…
